Marguerite Zurlo

As was customary in many Italian families, the youngest child would not
marry, but remain at home until their parents were gone. Marguerite was
the youngest of the Zurlo children, and named after the Italian queen,
Marguerite. She lived at home with her mother, Teresa. Unfortunately, she
preceded her mother in death by four years, following a short bout with a
very aggressive form of breast cancer. Marguerite was a lovely woman, with
pale complexion, raven hair, and sparkling aquamarine eyes flecked with
gold.
Like her father, she had a beautiful voice and harbored aspirations of being
a professional singer. She had planned on being discovered one day on major
Bowles' Original Amateur Hour, and listening to the weekly competition on
the
radio was her favorite pastime.
Aunt Marguerite was quite a good cook in her own right, and worked for
many years at the Hotel Petaluma, as an assistant chef. At home, however,
she deferred to her mother as a cook, while she always organized the
presentation of the meals and made the desserts.
On special holiday meals, an elegant appetizer was called for, to go with
dry white wine. there was nothing quite as delicious as Aunt Marguerites
sweet, ripe figs wrapped with a bit of prosciutto, sprinkled with a few
drops of lime juice. Sometimes, after having had a big noon meal,
prosciutto and figs were the main course of a simple, light evening meal,
accompanied by a few biscotti and coffee.
