Green Valley Sub-Appellation
The Green Valley Sub Appellation of Sonoma County occupies much of the
south west corner of the Russian River Valley Appellation.
This area was once planted heavily in Apple Orchards. Even today, the town of Sebastopol hosts the Apple Blossom Festival
every year. The primary highway through this region, Highway 116, is also referred to as Gravenstein Highway, for the numerous
Gravenstein apple orchards that used to be here.
This Green Valley, not to be
confused with the Green Valley in Solano County, is about twelve miles by four miles and has been producing wine grapes since the early-mid 1800's. Luther Burbank,
famous for his plant hybridization and selection, and for being the creator of the 'burbank' potato, bought a 15 acre farm on Gold Ridge, in the Green Valley Appellation in 1885.
It became one of his experiment
farms.
Due to it's location nearer the Pacific Coast than the rest of the Russian River AVA (American Viticultural Area), it's
very foggy conditions create a persistently cool climate. Mist from the Pacific Ocean drifts into this area,
through the Petaluma Gap. This climatic character results in the exceptional and unique Pinot Noir created with grapes from the Green Valley
Appellation. The coolness also results in longer growing conditions.
Some consider the wines produced from this region to be comparable to the classic european wines.
Chardonnays produced from this region tend toward a higher acidity and greater meyer lemon and green apple
fruit which is distinctly due to the cool climate and long growing season.
Pinot Noirs are generally considered to have a Blueberry, Bing Cherry or dried-berry characteristic with good alcohol creating a substantive wine like Syrah. Because they are seldom fermented in oak,
these exceptional Green Valley Pinot Noirs are recognized for
the dominance and purity of the fruit. Often referred to as
"silky" these wines have become extremely popular with Pinot Noir lovers around the world.
